1.Texas January 21st 2026 Corpus Christi

On January 21, 2026, a jury in Corpus Christi found Gonzales not guilty of charges related to child endangerment and abandoning a child during the May 24, 2022, Robb Elementary shooting. This was the first criminal trial tied directly to the law enforcement response to the Uvalde shooting, and the acquittal drew intense reaction from families of the victims. Gonzales was one of several officers facing charges, and his trial was seen as a major test for accountability in the handling of the massacre. 


 2.New York

An arrest was made in what may have been New York State's first murder of 2026. Police in Nassau County say Stephen Primm of Bay Shore opened fire on Joseph Fountain, 40, in New Cassel around 2 a.m. on New Year's Day. Fountain was struck four times. The shooting took place in front of a home where the victim and a third man were fighting. Police say Primm has prior arrests for drugs, assault and burglary.


3.California

Kevin Johnson, former NFL defensive lineman, found dead at 55 in homeless encampment Former Philadelphia Eagles and Oakland Raiders defensive lineman Kevin Johnson was pronounced dead after being found unconscious Wednesday morning at a homeless encampment in Los Angeles, according to the Associated Press. Johnson, 55, died from "blunt head trauma and stab wounds," the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner said. His death has been ruled a homicide. Authorities are investigating and believe Johnson was living at the homeless encampment at the time of his death. According to the AP, Johnson's friends believe health issues in his post-playing career contributed to his unstable living situation. The New England Patriots selected Johnson out of Texas Southern in the fourth round of the 1993 NFL Draft. The Patriots released him before the season, but he caught on for a brief stint on the Minnesota Vikings' practice squad. Johnson's NFL career found some traction in August 1995 when the Eagles claimed him off of waivers. That season, Johnson appeared in 11 games, starting one, while accumulating 19 tackles, six sacks and a defensive touchdown. Johnson also saw action in two playoff games that season, notching two tackles. In 1996, Johnson appeared in 12 games for Philadelphia and started in five. He totaled 24 tackles and a sack that fall, but the Eagles released him in December. Johnson signed with the Raiders ahead of the 1997 season, and he played in 15 games while recording 11 total tackles. After his NFL career came to an end, Johnson went to the Arena Football League, where he won an Arena Bowl championship with the Orlando Predators in 1998 and lost in the Arena Bowl in 1999. Johnson also played for the Los Angeles Avengers from 2000-01.

7.Tennessee 

Police are investigating a self-defense claim after a 28-year-old man was found fatally shot inside a home in the 3000 block of Bonnacreek Drive. Hermitage precinct officers responded to a shooting call at the residence around 2:50 a.m. Jan. 1, and investigators discovered the victim, identified as Brian De los Santos, dead on the basement floor, according to an MNPD release. Two brothers who live in the home, Christian Felipe-Valdez, 18, and Erik Valdez-Martinez, 22, were detained and taken to police headquarters for interviews, the release said. Detectives found Valdez-Martinez had recently allowed De los Santos to move into the basement. Valdez-Martinez told detectives he and his brother came home from a New Year’s party and found De los Santos under the influence of something, tearing apart a downstairs bedroom. He said De los Santos began to attack and shove him. According to police, Felipe-Valdez heard the commotion and went downstairs armed with a pistol. Felipe-Valdez told detectives De los Santos lunged at him and attempted to take the gun, so he shot him then called 911. Police released Felipe-Valdez after the interview as detectives continue to investigate the fatal shooting. Valdez-Martinez was arrested on drug charges after officers recovered more than three pounds of methamphetamine and 21 grams of cocaine in multiple plastic bags from the back of a pickup truck he drives, the release said. Valdez-Martinez has been booked on $155,000 bond.


8.Connecticut

A 26-year-old man was killed in a shooting in Hartford on Friday, January 16, 2026, marking the city's first homicide of the year. The incident began with a car crash into a telephone pole on Francis Avenue. which involved the Major Crimes Unit, took place at a scene where ballistic evidence was recovered. 


9.Iowa

On January 4, 2026, a Dubuque Police officer on patrol witnessed a shooting outside a bar, leading to an exchange of gunfire. Both the suspect, 28-year-old Jaiondrick Lovely, and the victim, 29-year-old Cory Wilson Jr., were killed.


10.Mississippi

24-year-old Daricka M. Moore was taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder, with prosecutors indicating the charges could be upgraded to capital murder.The victims included the suspect's father, brother, and uncle, as well as a 7-year-old girl (the suspect's cousin), a church pastor, and the pastor's brother.  The shootings occurred at three different locations in the rural community of Cedarbluff, near West Point. The suspect allegedly shot his relatives at their home, then broke into another home where he attempted a sexual assault and killed the 7-year-old, before driving to a church where he killed two more people. As of mid-January 2026, authorities had not disclosed a motive for the rampage. During a court appearance on Monday, Jan. 12, 2026, Moore pleaded not guilty to 11 charges, including capital murder, and was ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation.
