Evacuations ordered due to wildfire near trails west of Boulder in crisman community

Evacuations have been ordered for an area west of Boulder due to a wildfire on Monday evening, Boulder County officials said. Few details were immediately available, but county officials said the evacuation orders are in place in the area of 519 Wild Turkey Trail in Fourmile Canyon. As of about 7:15 p.m., the fire was estimated at 1 acre in size.

Evacuees are being told to avoid Wild Turkey Trail and take Evening Star Road for evacuations. Boulder County Sheriff's Office spokesman Vinnie Montez said in a video posted just before 6:30 p.m. that if you're in the evacuation zone, you should leave immediately. "This is not the time to start calling people to try to figure out what's going on; you need to heed the advice and do what you're being asked to do," he said.

He also asked others to stay out of the area so as not to interfere with first responders. The evacuation zone covers the unincorporated community of Crisman, about 8 miles northwest of downtown Boulder. An evacuation warning zone was later added east and west of the initial evacuation zone near Sugarloaf Mountain and Bald Mountain. No dedicated shelters have been set up yet, but the sheriff's office says if you need somewhere to go, you can go to the parking lot of the Boulder County Justice Center at Boulder Canyon Drive and 6th Street.

11-year-old from Minneapolis makes cover of snowboarding magazine

Snowboarding can be tricky, especially if your board is designed for something else. It's a challenge 11-year-old Mickey Watkins embraces as he tries to stand on a plastic tote bin lid while sliding down a small but precarious hill near his home. "It does not work," he said with a frustrated smile after another failed attempt nearly sent him falling. The tattered, flimsy lid is all he has to work with, along with the desire to emulate what the pros showed him last winter. "He just gravitated towards us and started hanging out and watching the guys snowboard," Mike Yoshida, a professional photographer, said. He's traveled the world capturing incredible shots of snowboarders shredding mountainsides and soaring between manmade structures. One stop included north Minneapolis back in February. Yoshida was there for a photoshoot that involved snowboarders doing tricks along a set of stairs and railing next to an apartment complex. Watkins, ever curious and never shy, was their up-close audience. He then grabbed a nearby tote bin lid and showed them his style of urban snowboarding. Yoshida happily snapped a photo of Watkins sliding down the hill.

"It's cool to be able to see his face," said Yoshida of Watkins' picture. "In snowboard photos, a lot of times people are wearing goggles and are covered up." But not in this picture, as Watkins' eyes and smile reveal emotions snowboarders know well: a blend of excitement and apprehension as the "board" starts to slide. "I think pretty much any snowboarder can relate to, like, that first time they stood up and just slid down. It's a very simple process, but it just feels so good," Colin Wiseman said. He's the content director for The Snowboarder's Journal. The monthly publication dives into the culture of sport. Photos that make an issue's cover are often a mix of majestic settings and exhilarating stunts. But for December's issue, he wanted to go in a different direction. Wiseman's team decided Yoshida's picture of Watkins would grace the cover. "It was a bit of an ongoing discussion because it does break the mold. And I don't know, I just felt that one in my gut. In my heart, I was just like, 'This one just feels good.'" said Wiseman. "Thankfully, people reacted to it the same way as me." The journal posted a picture of the cover featuring Watkins on Instagram, leading to a flood of comments praising their decision, some calling it their best cover yet. It even caught Yoshida off guard. Watkins' photo wasn't part of his initial submission to the journal, just one he posted to his personal Instagram. Wiseman saw Yoshida's post and requested he take the photo down so the journal could potentially use it in the future. Now, it's capturing the hearts of the snowboarding community far and wide. "I want to say this is probably one of the more important photos that I've ever shot because of the places it's going and the attention it's getting in a positive manner," Yoshida said. Watkins' mom, Bathsheba Burks, learned of her son's newfound fame through social media as the cover photo was getting shared in local Facebook groups. She somewhat remembers her son talking about how he was hanging out with snowboarders last winter, but didn't think much of it at the time. She's proud of what that interaction and picture has led to for her son. Wiseman's team sent Watkins a package loaded with The Snowboarder's Journal swag and several copies of Watkins' issue. "That's amazing. He should cherish that. He's going to cherish it," Burks said. Watkins said he had fun flipping through the issue's pages, marveling at the snowboarders pulling off thrilling jumps. But it's the image of a kid smiling on the cover with nothing but a tote bin lid that Wiseman hopes will inspire others to give the sport a try. "I hope it sends that message that snowboarding is for everyone, and you don't have to be doing it in some far-off exotic place. Just grab what you can and slide down a hill," Wiseman said.

5 hurt as fire rips through building in Williamsburg, Brooklyn

An early Monday morning fire ripped through an apartment building in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, leaving five people, including three firefighters, hurt. Many were able to escape the blaze on Humboldt Street, thanks to two neighbors who stepped up as soon as they saw the billowing black smoke.
Neighbors frantically knock on doors The four-alarm fire started on the first floor of 494 Humbolt just before 2 a.m., shortly before Bentley Robles and Ronan Counihan jumped into action to alert their neighbors. Without skipping a beat, the pair called 911 as they banged on doors to wake everyone up. "I literally am knocking on people's doors, being like, 'Emergency! Fire!'" Robles said. "There are flames that are just ... like, tidal waving up."

"We were in bed. Our neighbor came, ringing our door frantically, he woke us up. We smelled smoke, popped my head outside, flames shooting out of his building," one resident said. Firefighters arrived on the scene in less than four minutes and immediately started tackling the blaze. But the building, primarily made of wood, served up an unexpected obstacle for them. It's very labor-intensive. The fire gets into the voids of these very old structures. So we have to open up the walls, the ceilings, the floors, manually," FDNY Chief of Operations Kevin Woods said.

The fire quickly spread to two neighboring buildings, and grew to four alarms. Both 494 and 496 Humboldt St. were issued full vacate orders due to the extensive property damage. "Everything's gone," a tenant said. A miracle there were no fatalities, neighbors say Robles and Counihan said it was like a Christmas miracle that everyone and their pets made it out alive. "I have three dogs. So I'm just, like, the fact that no animals were hurt in this, along with people, it is a miracle," Counihan said. Three firefighters suffered minor injuries and two residents were treated for minor burns. The American Red Cross said it was assisting six adults with services. A total of three households were impacted by the fire. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

Steelers' DK Metcalf suspended 2 games for altercation with fan during Lions game

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf has been suspended for two games after getting into an altercation with a fan during Sunday's game against the Detroit Lions. According to a news release on Monday, the NFL suspended Metcalf without pay. He is scheduled to miss the Week 17 game against the Cleveland Browns on Dec. 28 and the Week 18 game against the Baltimore Ravens. The NFL suspended the wide receiver for what it called "conduct detrimental to the NFL for initiating a physical confrontation with a fan." Metcalf reportedly plans to appeal the suspension.

During the first half of Sunday's game at Ford Field, Metcalf was seen on camera getting into an apparent altercation with a fan during a commercial break. CBS Sports rules analyst Gene Steratore said during the game that because game officials did not witness the interaction, they could not penalize Metcalf from an officiating or in-game standpoint. The fan involved in the altercation with Metcalf "categorically denies using the 'N-word,' the 'C-word' or any racial, misogynistic, or hate-based language during the incident," according to a statement obtained by CBS News Detroit from the Michigan law firm representing him.

The fan, Ryan Kennedy, has experienced "harassment, threats and messages advocating violence" since reports on social media accused Kennedy of using a racial slur toward Metcalf and making a disparaging comment about Metcalf's mother, Head Murphy Law Firm said in the statement. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin did not have much to say after the game because he said he had not talked to Metcalf. "I heard about it, but I hadn't seen it, and I hadn't had an opportunity to talk to DK, and so I have no comment," the coach said. How much money will DK Metcalf lose? CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones reported that the wide receiver will lose $277,777 per game he misses. The suspension also voids at least $45 million in future guaranteed money, Jones reported, adding Metcalf can still earn the money back over the next two years.

South Oak Cliff football player in jail for allegedly shooting teammate following team's state championship

A player on the South Oak Cliff High School football team was arrested for a shooting hours after winning a state championship. Xavier Mayfield is in the Dallas County Jail on a charge of aggravated assault, jail records show. The Dallas Police Department said officers were called to a reported shooting on Knoll Ridge Drive in the southwestern corner of the city at about 9:30 p.m. on Saturday. Officers found a male had been shot in the neck with a rifle.

Officers asked 18-year-old Mayfield if he shot the victim; Mayfield said he had. Mayfield reportedly told officers that he was in the bathroom on the second floor getting ready to go to his room just before the shooting. He said the victim called his name, and when he turned around, "a single gun shot went off from the ARIS ABC Rifle" that he was holding.

Mayfield told police that he wanted to take the victim to the hospital for treatment, and so brought the victim downstairs and called 911 when they got to the front door. The victim was taken to a hospital for their injuries and was stable, police said, and Mayfield was arrested. One witness in the house told police they saw Mayfield swinging the rifle used in the shooting and that Mayfield said the safety was on. The Next Generation Action Network, a civil rights organization based in South Dallas, released a statement on Monday saying the shooting was accidental and the victim was a teammate. Dallas police have not yet responded to those claims or additional questions about the incident from.
