Top Gun 3 In Development

Paramount Pictures Co-Chair Josh Greenstein confirmed to a crowd at CinemaCon that "Top Gun 3" the trilogy zone for "Top Gun."  was in development with a script "well underway," based on reporting by Variety and The Hollywood Reporter. The third movie would also reunite movie star Tom Cruise with prolific movie producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who made the first two movies, according to Greenstein.

It's unclear what the plot of a third Top Gun could be about, but its sequel, "Top Gun: Maverick" -- released in 2022, 36 years after the original film introduces us to enough new supporting characters who could color a third movie. Since the last movie, Glen Powell has become an A-list name, fronting the cast of another blockbuster sequel with "Twisters" in 2024. Monica Barbaro, who played one of the mission candidates, also had a career takeoff, earning an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of folk singer Joan Baez in the 2024 Bob Dylan biopic "A Complete Unknown."

Of course, Iceman, played by Val Kilmer, will not return for this third movie. Kilmer died in 2025 at 65, after battling throat cancer, and his character presciently also passed away in "Maverick," with an on-screen funeral. "Top Gun: Maverick" was Kilmer's last film. The steamy Tom Cruise action-drama, once a standalone film, was a smash hit both in 1986 and 2022, proving that dogfights and beach sports can stand the test of time. The 1986 "Top Gun" was the highest-grossing movie of that year, and its sequel was the second-highest-grossing film of 2022, earning more than a billion dollars at the global box office.

So, it's no surprise that studio bigwigs would be looking to make more "Top Gun." In addition to Greenstein's announcement, David Ellison, the new owner of Paramount, reportedly said "Top Gun 3" was a top priority for the studio. Ellison, who had made ten movies with Cruise at his former company, Skydance, told The Hollywood Reporter that he wants to make movies with the actor as long as possible. Also likely involved is Paramount Pictures Co-Chair Dana Goldberg, who was sitting next to Greenstein during his announcement. Cruise, who produced and vociferously promoted "Maverick," has not yet commented on a third film. Still, with his "Mission Impossible" series supposedly wrapped up, the 63-year-old actor might be looking for a new franchise to helm. Hopefully, fans won't have to wait another 36 years though.
