The attack was shown on an episode of "On Patrol: Live" last year, and the deputy was hospitalized for months. A Tennessee deputy is seeking $2.5 million in damages from a man charged with trying to kill him with a rock in June 2025. The complaint filed in Knox County Circuit Court alleges Dalton Swanger suffered serious, debilitating head injuries after Christopher M. Hensley hit him in the head with a rock. The incident occurred the night of June 21, 2025, as Swanger and other deputies responded to reports of gunfire near Hensley's house.

A crew from "On Patrol: Live" had joined the officers that night and recorded what happened. As officers walked in the woods about 10 p.m., someone began throwing rocks at them. Besides Swanger, a rock also hit fellow Deputy Matt Kirchner, authorities allege. Hensley also yelled and cursed at the deputies, records state. Besides attempted murder, he faces aggravated assault, domestic assault and drug charges. Swanger spent multiple days in intensive care. He was off work for months, finally returning to duty April 3.

Hensley, 45, is being held in jail with his next court date set for October Swanger responded on social media by thanking the show's personnel "for making this entire experience something I’ll always look back on with gratitude. " He continued: As for the event I’m most recognized for, my injury, that was one of the most difficult seasons of my life. In a single instant,  I was confronted with the possibility of financial hardship, a diminished quality of life, the loss of my career, and, at certain points, even the loss of my life itself. Everything changed in the span of a heartbeat.

Across this country, people have many different opinions about law enforcement. Some support us, and some don’t. Often it feels like the loudest voices are the negative ones, and sometimes the media can make it seem as though that’s the majority opinion. But all of you showed me something different You stood beside me. You prayed for me. You donated money that you worked hard for, so I could focus on healing. You sent letters filled with encouragement, kindness, and hope when I needed it most. Every single one of you who reached out went far beyond anything I could have ever imagined.
